Accountant

*ABOUT THE ROLE*

We are looking for a detail-oriented and experienced Accountant to join our Finance team in Puerto Rico. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Puerto Rico-specific tax and regulatory requirements, and supporting the preparation of financial statements and audits. The ideal candidate has solid knowledge of Puerto Rico's tax code (Código de Rentas Internas de Puerto Rico), Hacienda filing requirements, municipal license taxes (patentes municipales), and experience navigating federal programs applicable to the island.

*KEY RESPONSIBILITIES*

*General Accounting*

* Maintain the general ledger and ensure timely recording of all financial transactions in accordance with US GAAP and Puerto Rico GAAP.
* Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and adjusting entries on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
* Reconcile bank statements, credit card accounts, and balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
* Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable cycles, including vendor payments and collections.
* Monitor and reconcile intercompany transactions for entities operating within Puerto Rico and the continental US.

*Financial Reporting & Analysis*

* Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow).
* Generate variance analysis reports comparing actual results to budget and prior-period performance.
* Support the annual budgeting and forecasting process in coordination with department heads.
* Prepare financial reports tailored to Puerto Rico statutory requirements and management needs.

*Puerto Rico Tax & Regulatory Compliance*

* Prepare and file Puerto Rico income tax returns (Form 480, 482, 483) and estimated tax payments with Hacienda (Departamento de Hacienda).
* Calculate, file, and remit Sales and Use Tax (IVU — Impuesto sobre Ventas y Uso) returns monthly.
* Prepare municipal license tax (patente municipal) filings for all operating municipalities.
* Manage annual corporate tax filings, including volume of business declarations (Declaración de Volumen de Negocios).
* Ensure compliance with Puerto Rico withholding tax obligations (retención en el origen) for employees, contractors, and vendors.
* Stay current with PR tax legislation, Act 60 (Export Services & Individual Investors) incentives, and applicable IRS regulations.
* Coordinate with external tax advisors and Puerto Rico CPA firms during audit and filing seasons.

*Payroll & Labor Compliance*

* Support payroll processing in compliance with Puerto Rico Labor Department regulations, including Christmas Bonus (Bono de Navidad), Sick Leave, and Vacation accruals per Law 180.
* Ensure proper withholding and remittance of PR income tax (Retención), FICA, FUTA, and SUTA (SUTA PR — DACO contributions).
* Assist with preparation of W-2PR and 499R-2 forms for annual employee income reporting.

*Audit & Internal Controls*

* Support external audit engagements by preparing audit schedules, providing documentation, and responding to auditor inquiries.
* Assist in the development and enforcement of internal controls to safeguard company assets.
* Identify and communicate accounting discrepancies and recommend corrective actions.

*QUALIFICATIONS*

*Required*

* Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited institution.
* Minimum 2–4 years of accounting experience, preferably within a Puerto Rico-based organization.
* Strong knowledge of Puerto Rico tax code (Código de Rentas Internas), IVU, and Hacienda filing procedures.
* Proficiency in accounting software (QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle, or similar ERP systems).
* Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, financial modeling).
* Full bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English — required for communication with local agencies, vendors, and US parent entities.
* Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
* Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

*Preferred*

* Familiarity with COFINA, GDB legacy obligations, or public-sector accounting (for government-adjacent roles).
* Knowledge of federal grant accounting and Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) for federally-funded operations.
* Master's degree in Accounting or MBA with Accounting concentration.

*COMPENSATION & BENEFITS*

We offer a competitive compensation package benchmarked to Puerto Rico market rates:

* Base Salary: *$45,000 – $62,000 USD annually*, based on qualifications and experience.
